The Toronto Raptors and the Vancouver Grizzlies both entered the league as expansion teams in the mid-1990s. They both came into the league firmly placed in the aesthetic that we had grown to expect from the visual identities that came from the NBA. Vibrant colors, gigantic logos and extremely unusual striping patterns. That was what was popular during that era and the Vancouver Grizzlies took to the court wearing teal jerseys with a larger-than-life wordmark across the chest and a striping pattern that was inspired by a "native Canadian Pacific Northwest pattern," as described by the Grizzlies themselves. It was a bombastic and loud uniform that perfectly fit in with the 1990s. That meant that it was doomed to stay in the 1990s and just as the team was gearing up for their move to Tennessee, the Grizzlies moved to a more traditional look that focused more on black rather than teal-and-red. This was the look that the Grizzlies wore once they moved and they simply replaced "VANCOUVER" with "MEMPHIS" across the chest of their black away jerseys.
